Best text expansion app for Mac
Forget retyping. Rocket Typist saves text snippets.
Whether you’re new to Mac or have been using it for years, highly specialized things like shortcuts, special Mac symbols, and accented characters might result in a web investigation spiralling out of control.
If you’ve just recently switched from Windows, you should know that Macs don’t really use alt codes to type special symbols. Instead, all of the most popular Unicode characters can be typed in right from the keyboard. Unfortunately, Apple could do a much better job of shining light at this functionality.
Truth is there are many more like this and below we’ll explore different ways of how to type copyright symbol on Mac or any special characters Macs allow, where to find Apple keyboard symbols, and whether there’s an emoji keyboard on Mac.
What Are All The Mac Keyboard Symbols?
While a standard computer keyboard contains around 80 keys, you’re able — in one way or another — use it to input all of the Unicode characters, of which there are about 130,000.
To start, simply explore how all the face-value characters change when you combine them with modifier keys — Control, Option, and Command. You can even combine multiple modifiers together as well. To see all Mac keyboard shortcuts symbols clearly, however, you need to turn on the full keyboard layout.

Display all Mac keyboard symbols
Even if you’ve been using your Mac for a while, it’s useful to look at all the possible keyboard combinations from time to time to refresh your memory and discover new ways of quickly inputting information.
Luckily, it’s easy to show all Mac key symbols at once:
Go to System Preferences ➙ Keyboard
Check the box next to “Show keyboard and emoji viewers in menu bar”
Now you can click on the language flag in your menu bar and choose Show Keyboard Viewer. The interactive display will appear, showing all the keyboard symbols and altering the view in real time when you use modifier keys.
Of course, even using all the modifier keys and combinations available, it’s impossible to fit all the characters in such constrained amount of space. To see all Mac key symbols, you need to select Show Emoji & Symbols option from the same language flag menu, or use a shortcut Control + Cmd + Space.
Here, you’ll see all kinds of categories on the left: Emoji, Arrows, Currency Symbols, etc. In the center are all the characters within a given category. And on the right you can pick a font variation of the same symbol.
To type in a TM symbol Macs use, for example:
Open your word processor of choice
Call the Mac symbols menu
Navigate to Letterlike Symbols on the sidebar
Double-click on ™ to paste it into your editor
How to create custom Mac keyboard shortcuts symbols
With the Show Emoji & Symbols window, you have access to nearly all Unicode characters you’ll ever need. However, if you need to use some special characters — such as a copyright symbol on Mac — rather frequently, it would be quite inconvenient to call up a menu and search for what you need every time. Of course, you can add the copyright symbol to your favorite characters, which will save you some time, but there’s a much better way.
Macs allow you to create shortcuts for all keyboard symbols to be able to easily type them in whenever you need. For example, to create a shortcut for the copyright symbol on Mac:
Type in a desired key combination to trigger the copyright symbol on Mac in the Replace column on the left
Although this default shortcuts method works well for characters or emoji, it doesn’t effectively translate into longer strings of text or paragraphs. If you want to, for instance, create a shortcut that outputs a sales email template, you’d need to use a little nifty tool called Rocket Typist.
Rocket Typist is a full-featured text expansion app created to minimize repetition in composing any form of text-based communication. It’s essentially a small database of text snippets you’ll use over and over again.
Starting with Rocket Typist is easy: use File ➙ New to create a new snippet, specify the abbreviation, fill out as much text (sentences or even paragraphs) as you need, and then use the abbreviation to expand text in any application.
How to switch between keyboard languages quickly
Sometimes, the Mac keyboard symbols you need are only available in another language — say, they could be Cyrillic-based. To access them, you’d need to enable another keyboard layout on your Mac.
Adobe lightroom classic cc 8 3 16. Luckily, it’s easy to do:
Go to System Preferences ➙ Keyboard
Navigate to Input Sources
Click the plus sign
Choose the language you need and press Add
Now, the second keyboard layout will be activated. Don’t forget to check the box next to “Show Input menu in menu bar” to see which layout is currently active. The standard shortcut to switch between layouts is Cmd + Space, but you can also change it to Caps Lock key in the Input Sources options.
Extra tip: typing emoji on iPhone is much easier if you add an emoji keyboard layout to your languages.
Special Characters: Type in various symbol variations
In some cases, you might just want to access a variation of the symbol that’s already on your keyboard, such as an accented letter.
One way to do this is to find the character of your choice in the Keyboard Viewer, as described above. Another way is to use a keyboard shortcut. You can get an acute accent by typing Option + E and then the letter. Similarly, circumflex is Option + I, grave accent is Option + backquote, tilde is Option + N, and umlaut is Option + U.
A quicker option though is to simply press the key of the letter you want to modify and hold it for a second until a small menu appears. Then just choose a number that corresponds to the modification you seek.
Digitize complex math expressions
If your studies or line of work require the use of complex math, you might be spending too much time crafting LaTeX and MathML expressions by hand. But as with nearly everything else nowadays, there’s an easier way.
MathKey is a Mac app specifically developed to write complex equations in academic papers and math documents. Instead of composing dozens of obscure symbols together, the app allows you to hand-write the equation using your trackpad (or mouse) and output perfect LaTeX or MathML, ready for publication.
Search for anything instantly
It’s likely that you won’t retain all the information provided here. But don’t worry, the only thing you need to keep is a supercharged search that can take you right back to the answer you’re looking for.
Lacona is an intelligent search for your Mac that contextually analyzes the query and outputs a range of possible solutions, whether it’s launching a certain app, looking it up online, or performing a pre-defined action.
Any question about Mac keyboard shortcuts symbols — such as “how to type copyright symbol on Mac?” — would be met with a guiding response. And all you have to do to start Lacona is press Option + Space.
So there are a lot of things your Mac is capable of that you might have not even considered before. With regards to symbols and characters, what you see on the keyboard is just a tiny slice compared to the total amount available. Using Mac symbols properly will enrich your communication, making it clear and efficient, especially if you get used to creating snippets with Rocket Typist, transferring math equations with MathKey, and keeping everything at the tips of your fingers with Lacona.
Best of all, the apps mentioned above are available to you on a free trial through Setapp, a platform of more than 150 specific Mac apps that are designed to make your days more productive and fun. Now you’re ready to solve some equations!

Moving Shorthand to another PC How do I move an entire word list or dictionary to another PC?
Howdo I embed dates (e.g. today's date or yesterday's data) in Shorthand?
Terminology
What's a keyword? Shorthand uses the term keyword torefer to a word that you define to represent a longer word or text. Other programs may use the terms 'short form,' 'short cut,' 'macro name'or 'abbreviation' to refer to what Shorthand calls a 'keyword.'
What's does 'Text to Type' mean? Shorthand uses the term Textto Type to refer to the text associated with the keyword. Other programsmay use the terms 'long form' or 'macro' to refer to what Shorthand calls'Text to Type.'
What's a dictionary? Shorthand stores your keyword/Textto Type entries in a dictionary. You can create more than one dictionarybut only one can be active at any time. Other programs may use the terms'word list,' 'glossary,' or 'abbreviation list' to what Shorthand refersto as a 'dictionary.'
Specifications
How many dictionary entries can Shorthand support? The theoreticalmaximum number of entries in a single dictionary is 2 billion. However,the practical limit is much lower and depends on the amount of free memoryavailable. We have successfully used a 20,000 entry dictionary with Shorthandon a 120 Mhz Pentium PC with 32 Mb of RAM. The number of dictionary filesis limited only by hard disk space.
What is the maximum number of characters that can be associated witha keyword? 32,000 characters total. You cannot get around thislimit; the text loaded by the @INPUTFILE tag counts toward this limit.This is a designed limitation to conserve memory; please contact OfficeSoftif you need to transfer large amounts of text.
General Questions
What is Shorthand?Shorthand is a text storage and transfer utility designed to workconcurrently with other Windows applications. Shorthand allows you to representfrequently used words, phrases and keystrokes with a much shorter commandor keyword. Instead of typing the word or phrase, you type the keywordfollowed by a punctuation mark and Shorthand will insert the text directlyinto the target application. With Shorthand, you can also define shortcutkeys (for example, Ctrl+Alt+C) to quickly play back pre-defined text orkeyboard macros. Shorthand is not limited to transferring static text,you can embed special fields ('tags') such as input fields, pick listsand date fields that allow you to dynamically change the text to be transferred.
How does Shorthand work? You start Shorthand as you would any Windows application. Shorthand waitsin the background until you need it. You start your word processor andbegin typing normally. Shorthand will automatically replace keywords asyou type. If you need to bring up Shorthand, you can simply press a pre-definedhot key (normally F10 unless you changed it) and Shorthand pops up andtakes control. You can then specify the text you want Shorthand to typefor you by entering a keyword or using the mouse to select the text froma list. If you wish, you may edit the text before Shorthand types it intoyour word processor.
What's the difference between Shorthandand my word processor's macros? Shorthand and your word processor'smacros have the same purpose--to reduce the number of keystrokes you needto type commonly used words. Shorthand has the advantage that it is nottied to a single word processor--you can use it with just about every Windowsword processor, text editor, and even with text edit boxes within dialogboxes. Shorthand is designed to be much easier to use than the macro abilitiesof most word processors (which usually requires programming); much workhas gone into designing a user interface that is readily usable by bothtouch typists and 'hunt-and-peck' typists.
Can Shorthand really work with almost allWindows GUI applications? Shorthand uses the Windows hooks mechanismto monitor and insert characters into the Windows keyboard message queue.Virtually all Windows GUI (Graphical User Interface) applications usesthe standard Windows keyboard message queue and Shorthand should work wellwith these applications.
Shorthand is a 32-bit Windows application;will it work with older Windows 3.1 word processors running under Windows95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP? Yes. Shorthand works with most Windows 3.1, Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP applications. An older 16-bit version of Shorthandis available if you are using a 16-bit Windows operating system; pleasecontact OfficeSoft if you need this version.
Does Shorthand work with DOS programs? No.Shorthand works only with programs that use the Windows graphic user interface.(Updated 4/24/06: A third party utility called Tame DOS may allow Shorthand to work with DOS applications;see the entry on Tame DOS in the Shorthand Third Party links page.)
Taskdeck 1 1 3. So what applications are incompatiblewith Shorthand? Shorthand may not work correctly with:
DOS, System Console and other 'text only' windows.
Applications (such as some terminal emulators) that do not understand theBACKSPACE key; for such applications, you can still use the Shorthand hotkey to insert text--press F10 to bring up Shorthand, select your keywordthen press the Type It button to insert the text.
Managing YourShorthand Dictionaries
Some or all of the entries in my dictionary have disappeared! Your dictionary can get corrupted if your computer powers off or restarts whileShorthand is still saving your dictionary. Shorthand automatically creates backup files and, if you have Shorthand v10.11 or later, you may be able to recover your dictionary by doingthis:
Choose Open from Shorthand's File menu.
In the 'Files of type' dropdown box, select: 'AutoBackups (*.~sp)'
Select the dictionary you wan to open. For example, if your dictionary was named 'main.spf', the auto-backed up files are named 'main.~sp', 'main~1day.~sp' or 'main~7days.~sp'. (TIP: Hover your mouse over the filename to see the file date and size.)
How can I convert another file formatinto the Shorthand file format? The SHCNV.EXE utility, includedwith the Shorthand program (choose Run File Converter from Shorthand'sFile menu), can convert certain ASCII text files,Microsoft Word AutoCorrect entries as well as most word lists generated by word expanders such as PRD, Smartype and Abbreviate. OfficeSoft is constantly adding support for other file types; please contactOfficeSoft if you would like to convert your word list to the Shorthand format.
How do I copy my dictionary to a USB drive? Choose 'Copy To' from Shorthand's File menu. In the 'Look In' box,select your USB drive (usually D: or E:) and click OK. This will copy theactive dictionary to the USB drive (linked enteries will NOT becopied). If you have more thanone dictionary, open the other dictionary by either clickingit's tab or by choosing Open from Shorthand's File menu the copyit to the USB drive by choosing 'Copy To' from Shorthand's File menu.
How do I move an entire dictionary to another PC? On the first PC, save your dictionary to a USB drive (see previous question).On your second PC:
Insert the USB drive then chooseOpen from Shorthand's File menu, in the Look In box select the USB Drive, click on the dictionary (.spf) file to open and click theOpen button. You should now see the contents of the dictionary inShorthand.
Choose Save As from the File menu, select a folder on your C: drivein the Look In box and click SAVE. This will copy the dictionary toyour hard drive.
How do I print the contents of a dictionary? You can print the contents of a dictionary to a text file by selecting'Print to File' from the File Menu.
Is there a way to conveniently addtext to my dictionary? If AutoReplace is enabled, you can quicklyadd a single word to your dictionary by pressing the Alt+Ins key immediatelyafter typing a word in your word processor. Alternatively, you can useyour mouse to select a block of text in your word processor and then pressCtrl+Ins twice to add the block of text to the active dictionary (thisworks only if your word processor uses the Ctrl+Ins key to copy text tothe clipboard).
How do I copy or transfer a dictionaryentry from one dictionary to another dictionary? Open both dictionariesand select 'Copy' from the Dictionary menu to copy a dictionary entry intothe clipboard. You can then use the Dictionary menu's 'Paste' command topaste the entry into the destination dictionary.
How do I append the contents of an entire dictionaryinto another dictionary? The SHCNV.EXE utility, included withthe Shorthand distribution files, can merge two dictionaries.Choose Run File Converter from Shorthand's File menu to start theSHCNV program.
Running Shorthand
Is it possible to run Shorthand automaticallywhenever I start Windows? Yes. Place the Shorthand program iconin the Windows Startup folder to have Windows automatically execute Shorthandwhenever you start Windows:
Click the Start button, choose Settings then Taskbar.
Click on the Start Menu Programs tab.
Click the Add button.
Click the Browse button. The Shorthand program is called SH9.EXEand is found in the folder C:Program FilesShorthand for WindowsSh9
(unless you placed it in a different directory during installation).
Shorthand doesn't work correctlywith some of my applications! Try slowing down Shorthand bychoosing Preferences from the File menu and setting the delay to something like 'Pause 50 msec every 1 keystrokes'. If that doesn'twork, try changing the text transfermethod. Shorthand has two methods for transferring text: by keyboard simulationand by simulating the clipboard paste operation. If you encounter a probleminserting text into an application, try changing the text transfer methodin Shorthand's Preferences box. If you are using Microsoft Word, be sureto disable MS Word?s AutoCorrect wizard by choosing AutoCorrect from MSWord?s Tools menu and unchecking the 'Replace Text as You Type' box.
After Shorthand inserts thetext, the text caret is positioned at the wrong place in the word processor! Try changing the text transfer method in Shorthand's Preference box.
How do I change the date/time formatsused by the LONGDATE, SHORTDATE, LONGTIME and SHORTTIME tags? You can define your own date/time format through the Regional option in the Windows Control Panel.For example, to set the LONGDATE styleto something like: '11/26/2010' you would specify theWindows 'Long Date' format to be: MM/dd/yyyy
After you change the Windows date format,you will need to restart (shut down then re-run) Shorthand for the changes to take effect.
Alternative Method: You can also use Tcl scripts to specify relative dates (such as yesterday's date or 2 weeks fromnow).
How do I get rid of the message that asksfor confirmation whenever Shorthand exits? Go to the Displaypage in the Preferences box and check the 'Do Not Confirm Exit' option.
Using Shorthand Efficiently
How does Shorthand's AutoReplace functionwork? You enable AutoReplace by checking the AutoReplace boxthat appears above the Keyword box in Shorthand's Main Window. When AutoReplaceis enabled, Shorthand watches your keystrokes as you type. When you typea recognized keyword the AutoReplace window pops up and displays the keywordand the associated text. If you type a SPACE, ENTER, TAB or a non-alphanumericcharacter, Shorthand will backspace over the keyword and insert the textassociated with the keyword directly into your word processor.
How do I create an abbreviation for '-year-old'? Define the following entry:
Keyword:yo Text to Type: {@KEYbksp}-year-old
Note: Type the TEXT TO TYPE string EXACTLY as you see it (exactly 20 characters).
How it works:The presence of the phrase '{@KEY bksp}' in the TEXT TO TYPEtells Shorthand to simulate a backspace.You can find out more about the {@KEY} command in Shorthand'sHelp file (choose Contents from the Help menu and search for@KEY.)
How do I apply special fonts such as bold or italics? You cannot bold words inside Shorthand but you can use Shorthand to simulate the keystroke commands to turn bold on/off in yourword processor.Shorthand can only simulate keystrokes. Shorthand can apply formatting (superscript, bold, italics, etc.) if you know what your application's keystroke command to apply the formatting.
In Microsoft Word, the keystroke command to turn boldingon/off is Ctrl+B and you can use Shorthand's{@KEY} tag to simulate the ctrl+b keystroke. For example, if you enter this string in the Shorthand Text to Type box:
{@KEY ctrl+b}this is bold{@KEY ctrl+b}
(Note: type the above text exactly (38 characters) or use your mouse to cut and paste the above text into Shorthand.)
Shorthand will type out 'this is bold' in bold when you expand the text in Microsoft Word.You can find out more about the {@KEY} command in Shorthand'sHelp file (choose Contents from the Help menu and search for'@KEY'.)
You can extend this concept to apply different font stylesto your text. The trick is to find out (or configure) a keyboard shortcut in your word processor to apply the desired style then use Shorthand's {@KEY} command to simulate that keystroke.
Here are some common keyboard commands recognized by Microsoft Word:
Superscript on/off: {@KEY ctrl+shift++}
Subscript on/off: {@KEY ctrl+=}
Non-breaking hyphen: {@KEY ctrl+shift+-}
Non-breaking space: {@KEY ctrl+shift+space}
Italics on/off: {@KEY ctrl+i}
Underlining on/off: {@KEY ctrl+u}
To summarize: If you can do something entirely using only keystrokes,you should, in most cases, be able to create a Shorthand macro to simulates those keystrokes.
How do I tell Shorthand to automaticallyinsert the closing parenthesis whenever I type the opening parenthesis? To do this define the following entry:
Keyword:( Text to Type: (){@KEYLeft}
Now whenever you type a left parenthesis, Shorthand will automaticallyinsert the left and right parentheses and simulate a left arrow key toplace the caret at the proper position between the parentheses.
How can I define prefixes andsuffixes? Shorthand will replace keywords when you type a non-alphanumericcharacter. This means that you can define a prefix by simply ending thekeyword with a punctuation mark. Suffixes can be defined with keywordsthat begin with a punctuation mark. Here is an example:
Keyword:m; Text to Type:micro
Keyword: pc Text to Type:computer
Keyword: ;z Text to Type: ization
Now if you type m;pc;z, Shorthand will expand it to microcomputerization.
Do I have to memorize keywords to useShorthand effectively? If you have difficulty remembering keywords(and who doesn't!), Shorthand has an AutoComplete function that finds theclosest keyword. Whenever you type two or more commas after a word in yourword processor, Shorthand will find the closest keyword that begins withthe word you had typed. For example if your name is 'George Washington',you can add the following entry into your dictionary:
Keyword: george Text to Type: GeorgeWashington
Now if you type g, ('g' followedby two commas), Shorthand will match this to the closest keyword startingwith 'g', which is the george
keyword (assuming you have no other keyword starting with 'g'). Note thatthe same result will be true if you had typed ge,, geo, or even george, .
Shorthand doesn't seem to recognizekeywords with embedded punctuation marks such as 'don;t'. Shorthandnormally treats non-alphanumeric characters as word separators that markthe beginning or end of a word. So if you type don;t, Shorthand sees this as two words ('don' and 't') separated bya semi-colon. However there is a way to get around this. Shorthand willtreat the semi-colon as part of the keyword rather than a word separatorif you define the following entry:
So if you want Shorthand to replace don;t with don't you should define two entries:
Keyword: don;t Text to Type: don't
Keyword: don; Text to Type: don;
Similarly, to have Shorthand replace the word we;re with we're , you willneed three entries:
Keyword: we;re Text to Type: we're
Keyword: we; Text to Type: we;
Keyword: we;r Text to Type:: we;r
Tip: If your aim is to correct spelling errors where a semi-colon is typedinstead of an apostrophe (such as don;t, can;t, you;re, we;ve, I;ll, etc.),you could simply define the following keywords:
Keyword: ;t Text to Type: 't
Keyword: ;re Text to Type: 're
Keyword: ;ve Text to Type: 've
Keyword: ;ll Text to Type: 'll
Using Shorthand withMicrosoft Word
Can I use Shorthand together with MicrosoftWord's AutoCorrect Wizard? We recommend you turn off MS Word'sAutoCorrect Wizard while using Shorthand. If you leave it on, the AutoCorrectWizard may try to expand the text Shorthand inserts which may produce unexpectedresults.
Why do some spaces disappear in MS Word? MS Word has a feature to automatically delete spaces from text insertedthrough the clipboard. If you set Shorthand to use the clipboard toinsert text, some spaces may disappear as a result. You can eitherchange Shorthand's text transfer method to keyboard simulation (choosePreferences from Shorthand's File menu) or you can tell MS Word not to remove spaces from clipboard text as follows:
Choose Options from the MS Word Tools menu. Click on the Edit tab. Uncheck the 'Use smart cut and paste' option.
What's the difference betweenShorthand and Microsoft Word's AutoCorrect wizard? Shorthandhas the following advantages over MS Word's AutoCorrect wizard:
Shorthand works with almost all Windows applications including dialog boxesand forms.
You can organize your keywords into separate dictionaries with Shorthand.
Shorthand has better support for suffixes and prefixes.
You can insert keystroke macros, input fields and variables in Shorthand'stext.
Shorthand supports automatic keyword completion if you type two ormore commas after a word.How can I transfer my MSWord AutoCorrect entries into Shorthand? The SHCNV.EXE utility,included with the Shorthand distribution files, can do this for you.Choose Run File Converter from Shorthand's File menu to start theSHCNV program.
